District: Thanjavur
State: Tamil nadu
Country: India
Thanjavur is one of the popular cities in Tamil nadu. It is also considered to be one of the important
tourism spot in India. Thanjavur has become popular mainly because of world fame
BIG TEMPLE.Thanjavur was once famous for its agriculture and farming. But now it has diminished due to several reasons. It is a much needed city to visit. Though you dont have too many
places to visit here, it is enough to spend atleast one half of the day(probably after the forenoon session). Most of them who visits Thanjavur will come with a plan of visiting nearby
town(most probably Kumbakonam which is called as temple city. Some of them will also go beyond Kumbakonam to cities like Chidambaram which is fame for Natarajar temple &
Pichavaram boating). If you have a plan of visiting Thanjavur then I will suggest you to go Kumbakonam first on one morning. You have plenty of temples to visit there(Gangai konda Cholapuram, Uppili appar temple, Dharasuram temple, Patteeswaram temple, Saraswathi temple-which is very rare to find anywhere, Navagraha temples & list goes on). Just have the selection of temples around Kumbakonam & go accordingly to manage the forenoon session. Then
come to Thanjavur by afternoon session. You have the list as
follows:
1) Tanjore Museum- where you can find all olden golden
usages of the kingdom & have a different experience. This is
located very near to Tanjore old bus stand. So if you travel
by bus, then get down in Old bus stand & have a walk.(you
may also call for autorickshaw or a call taxi if you are
inconvenient to walk) Try to visit this museum by around 2pm
so that there wont be any crowd as well as you can have a
peaceful look.
2) Tanjore Sivagangai Poonga(Sivagangai park)- where you have grass space to relax, swimming pool, boating, cable car travel, collection of some species in animals & birds, a mini train to ride around the park, swing & see-saw like funs to children. This park is located very next to BIG TEMPLE.
Thus walkable distance from BIG TEMPLE.
3)BIG TEMPLE
4)Mani Mandapam- it is a mini sivagangai poonga. Not any funs here but just to sit & relax. Normally, only Local people in Thanjavur will visit here to relax during the evening time.
The first 3 places are more than enough to cover half of the remaining day.
In the evening time you may have your tiffen around the Old bus stand of Thanjavur. You have Bombay sweets, Krishna sweets(where chats are available). You can also have some quality vegeterian hotels like Meenakshi Bavan, Vasantha Bavan around Tanjore junction circle.
Some disadvantages:
1) There is no proper rail facility to Thanjavur. Only least number of trains from main cities crosses Thanjavur junction everyday. (Jan Shatabdi express from Coimbatore, Mysore Express, Chennai Express from Trichy & Nagore, Rockfort Express, Rameshwaram Express from Chennai, some weekly trains to Madurai & thiruchendur).
2) No theme parks available inside & outside Thanjavur which is sometimes a dissappointment for children.
